BIRMINGHAM, AL — Philip K. Way, Ph.D., director of the University Honors Scholars Program at the University of Cincinnati (UC), has been named University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) associate provost for undergraduate programs. He will join UAB on September 1, 2006.
In this newly created position, Way will focus on UAB’s Quality Enhancement Plan that addresses the core curriculum and work with leaders of undergraduate programs to further enhance learning across all undergraduate programs. Way takes over from interim associate provost Marilyn Kurata, Ph.D., director for core curriculum enhancement.
UAB Provost Eli Capilouto, Ph.D., pointed to Way’s extensive experience in teaching and results-based strategic planning as key to his new role at UAB, where his primary responsibility will be implementation of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) launched in 2005. QEP describes a shared vision for every UAB graduate, regardless of his or her field of study. The QEP promotes strengths essential for success in work and life: effective communication skills; depth and breadth of knowledge; experience with problem-solving; and the ability to make informed, ethical decisions and be prepared for responsible citizenship in the community, nation and world.
“Dr. Way is a proven leader in helping to initiate or refine programs that best serve and prepare students and engage the faculty and staff,” Capilouto said. “He will work with all UAB deans and program directors to ensure curricula of superior quality that uphold the intellectual rigor of an exciting undergraduate education and strengthen recruitment of a diverse student population. We could not be more pleased that he will be joining UAB at this exciting time of growth.
“He has a remarkable record of achievement in undergraduate education. He grew the honors program from 750 in 1998 to 2,200 in 2005, increased diversity, and instituted a first-year learning experience. Earlier, he led the Project to Improve and Reward Teaching.”
In addition to his role as director of the UC 2,200-member honors program, Way, a tenured economics professor, teaches in the university’s Center for Organizational Leadership in the master’s in labor and employment relations program. His areas of concentration are strategic human resources, leadership and the economics of human resources.

Way earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Selwyn College, Cambridge University in 1976. In 1977, he earned his masters in industrial relations at the University of Warwick, where in 1986 he also earned his Ph.D. in industrial and business studies. He was also a Frank Knox Memorial Fellow and Visiting Fellow at Harvard University. In 1991, he earned lifetime certification as a Senior Professional In Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
He has held positions of progressive leadership throughout his career, which began at Nuffield College, Oxford University in 1977. In 1985, he became an assistant professor at UC, where he was named director of the University Honors Scholars Program in 1999. He is a member of several professional organizations and has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly publications.
