BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior Valerie Gribben, 20, has received an honorable mention in the USA Today 2006 All-USA College Academic Team Program. She is one of 23 students nationwide named as an honorable mention member of the team.
Gribben, a resident of Montgomery, is majoring in chemistry with a minor in English. She has a 4.0 G.P.A., and has been accepted into the Early Medical School Acceptance Program at UAB.
Gribben has been a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta Honor Society. She was named as an Outstanding General Chemistry Scholar by the department for 2004-2005.
While in high school, Gribben published a novel, “Fairytale,” (Junebug Books, 2003). “Fairytale” is a fantasy, coming-of-age story about a young woman engaged to be married. “Fairytale” has been honored with several awards. Gribben is now hard at work on her second and third books to complete the fantasy trilogy.
Gribben has been active on campus as a senior staff writer and photographer for the UAB student newspaper, Kaleidoscope. She also has been the historian for the student affiliate of the American Chemical Society, an executive board member of the Alpha Lamda Delta National Honor Society and a 2005 student member of the American Medical Student Association for Undergraduates.
Gribben is a 2004 graduate of Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School. She is the daughter of Irene and Alan Gribben, Ph.D., of Montgomery.
