Author and New York Times columnist Anthony Appiah will speak at UAB

cosmo streamAnthony Appiah, Ph.D., author and professor of philosophy and law at New York University, will speak at the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 1, at the UAB Alumni House, 1301 10th Ave. South.

Appiah will discuss his award-winning book, “Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers,” in which he offers a new approach to living a moral life in the modern age and explores new ethics that celebrate our common humanity while still offering a practical way to manage our differences.

Appiah writes a weekly column for New York Times Magazine called “The Ethicist,” which addresses readers’ ethical questions and dilemmas. He was named to Forbes Magazine’s 2009 list of the world’s seven most powerful thinkers, selected by the president of Princeton University. In 2010, Foreign Policy named him one of the top 100 global thinkers. He was presented with a National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama in 2012.

The Jemison Visiting Professor Lecture is presented by the UAB Department of Philosophy, which is housed in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.
