UAB Meadow Classroom to open Sept. 25 in Red Mountain Park

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held 2 p.m. Sept. 25. The UAB Meadow Classroom is reachable by a 30-minute hike into Red Mountain Park.After two years, more than 600 UAB volunteers and 2,400-plus hours of work, Red Mountain Park’s UAB Meadow Classroom will open Sept. 25. The classroom is situated amid the urban mega park, comprising 1,500 wooded acres located in Birmingham, and is a place to explore the history of the city’s ore-mining operations, as well as geology, biodiversity and other natural resources, and get some exercise and find adventure.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in the outdoor classroom, which sits on a restored meadow accessed by recently beautified hiking trails, all work done by UAB volunteers. It is reachable by a 30-minute hike into Red Mountain Park. UAB Provost Pam Benoit and Vice President of Financial Affairs and Administration Allen Bolton, along with UAB and Red Mountain Park supporters, will cut the ribbon.

Red Mountain Park is a community partner of the UAB Benevolent Fund and is one of the designated nonprofits to which UAB employees can direct their Benevolent Fund donations. Other UAB groups that contributed resources and volunteers include the schools of Public Health and Nursing, UAB National Alumni Society, the Department of Anthropology, UAB students studying environmental science and sustainability, and volunteers from the Into the Streets campaigns. Student groups such as Phi Gamma Delta, Theta Chi, Delta Epsilon Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, Kappa Sigma, Circle K International and the Ultimate Frisbee Club also contributed.
