University of Alabama at Birmingham students, faculty, staff, community partners and friends will convene at a campus-community forum to examine the importance of civility to the process of dialogue and engagement about public issues from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, in Heritage Hall, Room 102.
The forum brings together a diverse panel of scholars, social justice advocates and community leaders for “A Dialogue on Civility and Decoding Activism in the 21st Century.” All are welcome to this free, public event.
“We can all do our part to treat everyone with respect and consideration, even those with whom we disagree,” said Paulette Patterson Dilworth, vice president of the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “While there are no simple answers, together we can work to create an environment where our interactions are conducted with civility. All benefit when more voices come to the table to reach solutions for everyone. With dialogue, we can begin to turn the tide in what many are calling an increasingly uncivil society.”
Panelists are:
- Anthony Hood, Ph.D., UAB assistant professor of strategic management and entrepreneurship
- Khawla Suhaila, UAB student leader and Social Justice Advocacy Council intern
- Dr. Zac Henson, founder, Cooperative New School for Urban Studies and Environmental Justice
- Rev. Jennifer Sanders, community minister and pastor of Beloved Community Church
- Nick Van Wagoner, M.D., UAB associate professor, assistant dean of students
- Nyesha Black, Ph.D., UAB sociologist, will serve as moderator.
This forum is co-sponsored by the UAB Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, UAB Institute for Human Rights, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
