As a prelude to the highly anticipated visit of Nobel Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee on Sept. 29, the UAB College of Arts and Sciences will host a screening of the documentary, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” on Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Hill Student Center Alumni Theatre at 3:30 p.m. The screening is free and open to the public.
The documentary is a gripping account of a group of brave and visionary women, led by Gbowee, who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn by a decades-old civil war. Gbowee was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for leading the nonviolent movement that brought together more than 3,000 women across ethnic and religious lines. Their efforts brought an end to the Second Liberian Civil War and ensured women’s participation in elections. The historic achievement paved the way for the election of Africa’s first female head of state, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was also awarded a Nobel Prize in 2011.
Gbowee will give a lecture at UAB on Thursday, Sept. 29. The free public event, which marks the opening of the UAB Institute for Human Rights, will take place at the UAB Alys Stephens Center, located at 1200 10th Ave. South at 6 p.m.
