Enthusiasts of piano will have more than one opportunity to listen as award-winning University of Alabama at Birmingham students have concerts set in April.
Sophomore Eamon Griffith of Birmingham and junior Aleksandra Kasman of Vestavia are piano students in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music. Both won at the Alabama Music Teachers Association’s College Concerto Competition on Friday, March 18, held at Samford University.
Griffith is a member of the UAB Honors College and is an applied music major. Kasman is a music major and a member of the UAB Honors College’s University Honors Program.
As a result of the AMTA wins, Griffith will play Franck’s “Symphonic Variations” and Kasman will play Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (Finale) at the AMTA State Conference in early June.
They will perform these winning pieces and others Sunday, April 17, at the UAB Department of Music’s spring Piano Studio/Piano Ensembles recital. Both are students of Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence Yakov Kasman; Aleksandra is his daughter.
The recital will feature 13 piano studio students of Kasman and ensembles directed by instructor Tatiana Kasman performing solo and piano ensemble works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Schumann, Franck, Ravel, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Piazzolla. The recital will take place at 7:30 p.m., in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Admission is free. Call 205-934-7376 or visit www.uab.edu/cas/music.
“It will be a great concert demonstrating some of the outstanding work of our piano students over the spring semester, as well as their passion and love for piano and for music,” Kasman said.
Aleksandra Kasman will perform a recital Thursday, April 21, as a part of the Department of Music’s Young Performing Artists Program. Kasman’s Junior Piano Recital is set for 7:30 p.m., in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Admission is free. Call 205-934-7376 or visit www.uab.edu/cas/music.
