Works created by 48 University of Alabama at Birmingham students and selected by juror Paul Rusconi will be on display in the 40th annual Juried Student Exhibition from April 1-15.
The annual Juried Student Exhibition, coordinated by the College of Arts and Sciences’ UAB Department of Art and Art History and presented in the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts galleries, includes student works selected by a professional artist.
“It’s an honor to be a juror for this annual student exhibition at UAB,” Rusconi said. “This show represents works from all those who entered submissions. This exhibition showcases a cross section of students and their varied mediums and offers a glimpse into their physical, emotional and visual environments.”
An opening reception is planned from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 1, at AEIVA, 1221 10th Ave. South. Before the reception, at 5 p.m., Rusconi will give a visiting artist lecture. Both events are free and open to the public.
Rusconi’s work is also the subject of AEIVA’s concurrent exhibition, “Paul Rusconi: Emanations,” which will be on view April 1-30.
“Paul Rusconi: Emanations” is composed of paintings of artists who have transformed their fields. Subjects include Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, Agnes Martin and Chuck Close. Rusconi’s investigation and interest in the portrait begins with his own photo-based images as well as found or sourced materials. This body of work is a process of hand-applying nail polish onto Plexiglas. His concern with the portrait is not only the conveyance of likeness, but also the subtlety of emotion and expression that is found somewhere between the light and shadow of one’s face.
In addition to his solo exhibition and visiting artist lecture, Rusconi will meet senior BFA students for one-on-one studio critiques and drop in at the Chucks & Tux studio workshop, where DAAH faculty and students will assist design competition winners from Birmingham City Schools in bringing custom Chuck Taylor Converse shoe designs to life.
