David B. Joseph, M.D., Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and a professor of the UAB Department of Urology was honored during the 2023 Annual American Urological Association’s Annual Meeting held in Chicago.
Joseph was recognized with the Distinguished Service Award for his exceptional dedication to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Board of Urology, and the field of pediatric urology.
Every year, the American Urological Association (AUA) recognizes physician researchers and educators for their notable efforts and contributions to the urology specialty, AUA, and the field of medicine.
Joseph has been a lifelong leader in the urology community and has served on several national councils including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Urology Residency Review Committee, was the past President of the Societies for Pediatric Urology, and past Chair of the Section on Urology of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He also served on multiple committees of the American Board of Urology (ABU) and ultimately as past President of the ABU. Joseph is currently the Chair of the ABU Lifelong Learning/ Continuing Urologic Certification Committee and is serving as Chair-Elect of the Committee on Continuing Certification (3C) for the American Board of Medical Specialists.
Joseph serves as one of the lead investigators of the CDC’s National Spina Bifida Patient Registry and is PI for the decade-long CDC initiative held by Children’s of Alabama called the Urologic Management to Preserve Initial Renal Function Protocol for Young Children with Spina Bifida (UMPIRE) designed to provide an evidence-based protocol for testing and monitoring pediatric patients with the most severe form of spina bifida (myelomeningocele) to identify early kidney injury.
