World Mental Health Day is observed on Oct. 10 each year, dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues worldwide.
This day serves as a reminder that our mental well-being is just as important as our physical health, and it calls upon individuals, communities, and nations to take collective action to address the mental health needs of our global population.
The Importance of Mental Health
Mental health is an integral part of our overall well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, shaping our interactions with others and our ability to handle life's challenges. Unfortunately, mental health issues are prevalent worldwide, with millions experiencing anxiety, depression, and stress. The consequences of untreated mental health issues can be severe, impacting individuals, their families, communities, and society.
“Prevention and early intervention efforts are key to reducing the long-term impact of mental health issues,” said Kristine Lokken, Ph.D., associate professor and chief psychologist in the UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology. “Our Psychology faculty provides education, resources, and evidence-based assessments and psychotherapy to improve patient outcomes.”
Reducing Stigma
One of the most significant barriers to seeking help for mental health issues is the stigma associated with them. Talking openly about mental health creates an environment where people feel safe seeking help and support without fear of judgment.
“Mental health issues are closely linked to our physical health,” said Lokken. “Physical health problems can lead to mental health problems and vice versa. Thus, it makes sense to normalize mental health care as a part of a general medical check-up. Talking openly to health care providers about mental health concerns can help patients get connected to the resources they need.”
6 Tips for Better Mental Health
