The UAB Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology looks forward to welcoming Nathaniel G. Harnett, Ph.D., of Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, as its guest speaker at its 2024 Annual Research Symposium on April 23.
Harnett, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry for Harvard Medical School and Director of the Neurobiology of Affective and Traumatic Experiences Laboratory at McLean Hospital, will present on “The Neurobiological Consequences of Racial Inequities and the Relationship to Trauma and Stress-Related Disorders.”
Harnett’s research has involved using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, including functional MRI, structural MRI, and diffusion-weighted imaging, to identify PTSD vulnerability in patients following trauma exposure. In identifying the neurobiological processes that lead to an individual developing PTSD, Harnett’s work seeks to develop methods for early prediction and preventative treatment.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Harnett visit us at UAB as he obtained his Ph.D. from UAB and still has numerous friends within the UAB community,” said Adrienne Lahti, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology.
The 2024 Annual Research Symposium will feature presentations from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the CPM Auditorium. Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology faculty will present first, followed by Harnett. Faculty presentations include:
Lillian J. Brady, Ph.D., assistant professor, presenting “Sex-Specific Acetylcholine Regulation of Dopamine Release Mechanisms Through Nicotinic Receptors.”
Jennifer Lockman, Ph.D., associate professor, presenting “Suicide Recovery in Healthcare Systems: Emerging Directions for Research and Practice.”
Michael “Alex” Owens, Ph.D., assistant professor, presenting “Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia in People Living with HIV (PLWH) with Chronic Pain.”
The presentations will be followed by a poster presentation in the CIRC Atrium from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
