Michael Williams, M.D., M.Sc., Neuropathology fellow with UAB Pathology, has been selected as an honoree for The Pathologist's 2022 Power List, in the category of "First Contact." The list, published by the magazine, is an annual celebration of the great and inspirational minds that underpin the medical laboratory and honors select individuals in six different categories.

Williams was honored in the "First Contact" category, recognizing his work on the podcast he hosts, "Diversity in Path," which aims to, "explore how investing in diversity can lead to a high return of investment in pathology and lab medicine by learning from the knowledge and experiences of diverse voices within in our field."

Williams started the podcast in August 2021 shortly after moving to Birmingham to start his two-year Neuropathology fellowship at UAB Pathology. In each episode, he interviews individuals in the field.

"It’s an honor to be listed with such talented people on this year’s Power List," Williams says. "I have really enjoyed using the podcast as a vehicle to witness and share the stories of people in pathology and laboratory medicine. Being included allowed me to briefly mention that importance of prioritizing our mental health in medicine and our daily lives. I am super appreciative of all the individuals here at UAB that I have met, and very fortunate to continue my training in the divisions of neuropathology and forensics."

In June 2022, Williams was featured in the American Society for Clinical Pathology's (ASCP) Critical Values magazine PRIDE in the Laboratory campaign on June 14, for his personal essay, titled, "Is there even a guidebook?"

PRIDE in the Laboratory highlights the thoughts and experiences of members of the LGBTQIA+ laboratory community with the aim of creating a more inclusive environment for patients and members of the healthcare workforce.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Williams on this well-deserved recognition for initiating conversations around diversity and wellness in our field.
