The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) hosted its 113th annual meeting March 23-28, 2024 at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, Maryland, where members of UAB Pathology represented the department in full force to present various topics of research.
On Sunday, March 25, our team hosted a booth at the Fellowship Fair, featuring information about our program's opportunities. Faculty, staff and trainees were present to speak with interested applicants.
On Monday, March 26, Kyle Joseph, D.O., M.S., presented the poster, titled, "Folate Receptor-A Immunohistochemistry in High-Grade Serious Carcinoma: Concordance of Expression in Primary, Metastatic, and Recurring Tumor." Cristina Magi-Galluzzi, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, presented the poster, titled, "Post-Neoadjuvant Radical Cystectomies with No Residual Invasive Urothelial Carcinoma in the Bladder and Positive Lymph Nodes Demonstrate Unfavorable Disease-Specific Outcomes: A Multi-Institutional Study." Sarah Anderson, D.O., Gene Siegal, M.D., Ph.D., Shuko Harada, M.D., and Xiao Huang, M.D., Ph.D., presented the poster, titled, "Predictive Biomarkers for Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor (ICI) and Poly (ADP-Ribose) Polymerase (PARP) Inhibitor (PARPi) in Advanced Stage Breast Carcinoma." Fatme Ghandour, M.D., and Sameer Al Diffalha, M.D., presented the poster, "Exploring Fibronodular Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Case Series Investigating Histopathological and Clinical Characteristics, and Its Potential Association with Cirrhosis."
UAB Pathology members and friends gathered to attend the departmental reception after conference activities on Monday evening at the Hilton Baltimore Harbor Hotel.
On Tuesday, March 27, Brandi McCleskey, M.D., presented the poster, "Improvement in Coding and Certification of Sudden Infant Deaths with SUDPEDS (Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Pediatrics) Expert Panel Recommendations: Tale of Three Jurisdictions." Gian Piero Carames, M.D., Shi Wei, M.D., Ph.D., and Hua Guo, M.D., M.S., presented the poster, "Clinicopathologic Features and Response to Pembrolizumab Neoadjuvant Therapy in Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC): A Single Institution Experience."
Dr. Cristina Magi-Galluzzi and Sofia Canete-Portillo, M.D., presented the platform presentation, "Renal Juxtaglomerular Cell Tumors Are Not Driven by Recurrent Gene Fusions: Molecular Analysis of a Multi-Institutional Series." Gagandeep Kaur, M.D., Ana Franchini Fer, M.D., and Hua Guo, M.D., M.S., presented the platform presentation, "Upgrade Rates of Papillary Lesions in Breast Core Needle Biopsies after radiology-pathology correlation and Factors Associated with their Upgrade: A Single Institute Study with High Prevalence of Papilloma.” Dr. Cristina Magi-Galluzzi also presented the genitourinary platform presentation, titled, “Post-Neoadjuvant Radical Cystectomies with No Residual Invasive Urothelial Carcinoma in the Bladder and Positive Lymph Nodes Demonstrate Unfavorable Disease-Specific Outcomes: A Multi-Institutional Study.”
Dr. Sarah Anderson presented the poster, titled, “p53 Protein Expression Patterns Associated with TP53 mutations in Breast Carcinoma." Drs. Fatme Ghandour and Sameer Al Diffalha presented the poster, "P16 Immunohistochemistry Is Helpful in Differentiating Grade 3 Neuroendocrine Tumors from Neuroendocrine Carcinomas."
On Wednesday, March 28, Dr. Sofia Canete Portillo presented the posters, "Evaluating the Prognostic Index in Predicting Outcomes of Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Machine Learning Approach Across Brazil and Mexico Datasets," and, "Using Machine Learning Models to Assess the Predictive Power of Lymph Node Density and Other Clinical Variables in Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma Outcomes." Dr. Shuko Harada presented the poster, "Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma with Clear Cell Features: A Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical and Molecular Study of 29 Cases." Dr. Kyle Joseph presented the poster, "Interobserver Reproducibility in Evaluation of FOLR1 Immunohistochemistry, a Predictive Biomarker in Ovarian Carcinoma."
