The UAB Department of Pathology is proud to announce the recent renewal and awarding of research funds to several investigators in the Department's Division of Molecular & Cellular Pathology (MCP) and Anatomic Pathology.
Rajasekaran Namakkal-Soorappan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, successfully renewed his ongoing R01 grant on “Reductive Stress Induces Proteotoxic Cardiac disease” (competitive renewal) for the next term, with the major aim to address the translational potential of the “Reductive Stress in Heart Failure Patients.” The award, through July 2023, is funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Elizabeth Brown, M.D., Professor, is funded by the National Institute of Arthritis & Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases/NIH/DHHS for her work on, "Association of Genetic and Autoantibody Signatures with SLE Clinical Course," as well as an award for "Characterization of the Lupus Nephritis microRNAome" from the National Institute of Arthritis & Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases/NIH/DHHS.
Lalita Samant, Ph.D., Professor, received funding for her work on, "Breast Tumor Tissue-Derived Hedgehog Morphogens Immunoedit the Polarization of Breast Cancer Associated Macrophages" from the Department of Defense.
Casey Weaver, M.D., Professor, Anatomic Pathology, received funding for "Mechanisms Controlling Regulatory T Cell Function in IBD" from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases/NIH/DHHS.
Jinhua Zhang, Ph.D., Associate Professor, will continue to pursue research on "Lysosomal Enhancement Strategies in Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration" with support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke/NIH/DHHS.
Adam Wende, Ph.D., Associate Professor, received a non-competing continuation of his research funding for "Glucose-Mediated Remodeling of Cardiac DNA Methylation" from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Rajeev Samant, Ph.D., Professor, received funding through May 2020 from the Veterans Administration for "IPA - Impact of N-Myc Interactor on Metastatic Progression of Breast Cancer." Samant played host to Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin during a Halloween-day visit to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mayor Woodfin was scheduled to visit the laboratories of Drs. Lalita Shevde-Samant and Rajeev Samant. October is breast cancer awareness month and the Mayor and guests accompanying him were interested in learning about and getting an in action-view of the two laboratories. The graduate students, the staff and the PIs kept up their tradition of dressing-up for Halloween and gave a warm welcome to the Mayor. Dr. Rajeev Samant gave the mayor a quick overview of the cutting-edge breast cancer research performed at UAB. The students got the privilege of interacting with the Mayor and were impressed with his interest in the work.
