On August 15, 2022, the Department of Pathology welcomes a new faculty member to the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, directed by Ralph Sanderson, Ph.D.
Daniel Tyrrell, Ph.D., joins the department as assistant professor, Molecular and Cellular Pathology. Dr. Tyrrell joins us from the University of Michigan where he served as research investigator in the Department of Cardiology’s Division of Internal Medicine.
Tyrrell received his Ph.D. in Integrated Physiology and Pharmacology from Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, before completing postdoctoral training as a research fellow in the University of Michigan’s Department of Cardiology. During his postdoctoral training, Tyrrell published on how aging leads to vascular mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation which enhance atherosclerosis in a mouse model.
Tyrrell’s research interests include aging, inflammation, mitochondria, vascular dementia, atherosclerosis, mitophagy, vascular disease, immunology, senescence and neurodegeneration. His active NIH grant is titled, “Cerebrovascular Mitochondrial Function in Aging and Ischemic Injury.”
He holds membership in the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment, the American Heart Association, and the Gerontological Society of America’s Biological Sciences Section and serves as technical editor for the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Daniel Tyrrell to the UAB Department of Pathology and to Birmingham.
