C. Ryan Miller, M.D., Ph.D., Vishnu B. Reddy Translational Research Endowed Professor and Division Director, Neuropathology, has been named co-director of the Graduate Biomedical Sciences (GBS) Neuroscience Theme (NEURO).
NEURO provides training opportunities in the GBS Doctoral Training Program in multiple contemporary areas of scientific research- from fundamental discovery science at the molecular, cellular, systems, and behavioral levels, to translational studies in cellular and animal models of diseases of the nervous system. Students use an integrative approach in these areas in hopes of accelerating treatment options for nervous system disorders.
Miller will be working alongside co-director Michelle Gray, Ph.D., an associate professor in the UAB Department of Neurology, and associate director Cristin Gavin, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the UAB Department of Neurobiology. The three will be responsible for NEURO theme leadership, curriculum oversight, student recruitment and retention, applications and admissions, and mediating disagreements among other administrative tasks.
“I am excited to join the outstanding group of GBS theme directors and look forward to the opportunity to mentor the next generation of neuroscientists,” Miller says.
Miller’s clinical, translational, and basic research expertise and extensive teaching experience will make him a wonderful addition to the NEURO theme leadership team.
