Mythreye Karthikeyan, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, has been appointed Co-Leader of the UAB O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Biology and Immunology Program (CBI), effective January 1, 2025.
The goals of the CBI Program are to identify the basic mechanisms governing cancer cell biology and the immune response in order to develop novel therapeutic approaches. The program boasts more than 50 members across 16 departments. Karthikeyan will work closely with Co-Leader Robert Welner, Ph.D., to organize and coordinate program activities, guide strategic initiatives and interact with other programs in the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"Our goal is to build on the existing strengths of the Cancer Cell Biology and Immunology Program while also expanding initiatives," Karthikeyan said. "I'm looking forward to partnering with Dr. Welner and the rest of the Cancer Center’s leadership team to advance CBI's mission of translating basic cancer biology insights into therapeutic innovations”.
Karthikeyan's research focus is the cellular mechanisms of metastasis. Specifically, she integrates studies of TGF-β superfamily signaling, angiogenesis, ECM remodeling and tumor cell survival mechanisms to identify and develop targeted interventions for cancer patients. Karthikeyan co-directs a T32 program in Translational Molecular Sciences and co-led the recent cancer faculty search for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mythreye Karthikeyan on her new role.
