The Department of Pathology is pleased to announce the establishment of the Stephen E. Brossette, M.D., Ph.D., Endowed Residency Program Support Fund, effective April 2022.
The fund includes an annual award, administrated by the department, with any additional funds used for professional development, travel, or other support for the residency program. Each year, the department will administer the PEARL Award to the pathology resident who demonstrates excellence in Patient care, Education, and Research within Laboratory medicine (or just ‘the Lab’). The candidate will be selected by vote among laboratory medicine (and affiliated divisions) as well as hospital laboratory supervisors, who interact with residents regularly. The criteria include demonstrating initiative, effective communication, collaboration and teamwork, patient care, research, and innovation/quality focus.
The inaugural PEARL award was distributed at this year’s reception for outgoing residents and fellows on May 5 to Sarah Anderson, D.O., PGY3, AP Chief Resident, by Nirupama Singh, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Laboratory Medicine.
"It is truly an honor to receive this award," Anderson says. "I first and foremost want to thank Dr. Brossette for his generosity and dedication to the field of laboratory medicine. Having an opportunity to receive support from a former UAB alumni is very special and heartwarming."
Dr. Stephen Brossette, a New Orleans native, came to UAB to participate in the Medical Science Training Program to earn his medical degree and a doctorate in Computer and Information Science. Brossette was a clinical pathology resident following medical school, working under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Moser, Professor Emeritus, UAB Pathology.
Brossette's dissertation addressed a method to prevent healthcare-acquired infections using data analytics. This work resulted in two patents. After graduation, Brossette joined the Department as a clinical pathology resident. In 2000 he raised venture capital, left UAB and formed MedMined, Inc. initially based in UAB’s Research Foundation Incubator and subsequently sold to Cardinal Health (CareFusion) in 2006 in a multimillion-dollar deal.
"It is such a privilege to be a pathology resident at UAB," Anderson says. "The exposure to laboratory medicine along with the dedication of truly phenomenal laboratory medicine faculty, supervisors, and staff is something I will always cherish and never take for granted."
The Department of Pathology is grateful to Dr. Brossette for his generous support of our residency programs in an ongoing way.
