On April 1, 2023, the Department of Pathology welcomes a new faculty member to the Division of Laboratory Medicine, directed by Vishnu Reddy, M.D.
Katayoun Fomani, M.D., joins the Department as Associate Professor, Laboratory Medicine, from the Long Island Jewish Medical Center where she served as an Attending Physician and the Medical Director of the Blood Bank.
Fomani received her medical and undergraduate degrees from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Following graduation, Fomani completed a Residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, from 1988 to 1993. During that same timeframe, she worked as an Attending Physician for the Iranian Blood Transfusion Services. From 1998 to 2008, Fomani served as a pathologist from 1998-2008 for the Kavoshyar Company and the Park Clinic in Iran.
Fomani completed postdoctoral training from 2010-2014 at the Montefiore Medical Center and New York Blood Center. She joined the Long Island Jewish Medical Center as an Attending Physician in 2014. In 2017 Fomani joined the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell as an assistant professor.
Her research interests include early resuscitation of trauma patients with blood products, especially frozen platelets, and whole blood, establishing patient blood management versus current utilization of blood management, and changing the medical student curriculum to know-how approach to improve student training in transfusion medicine.
In 2020, Dr. Fomani received the Teacher of the Year award from Northwell Health, and in 2022 received the Patient Compliments for Excellence award from Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
Fomani is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM), the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Apheresis and the American Association of Blood Bank.
