The UAB Office of Research would like to announce the appointment of Shannon Bailey, Ph.D., Professor, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, has been named Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) by the UAB Office of Research. Dr. Bailey’s appointment became effective August 1, 2022.

“Dr. Bailey is an excellent choice for chair of the IACUC, bringing a strong portfolio of research, teaching, administrative, and leadership expertise that will be assets to the IACUC and the broader research community at UAB,” said Christopher Brown, Ph.D., Vice President for Research. “We look forward to her contributions as IACUC chair.”

Dr. Bailey has been a member of the UAB IACUC since fall 2012. Dr. Bailey comes to this position with extensive experience in conducting and supervising research projects involving animals, largely involving rodent models to investigate mechanisms of liver disease. She has a broad knowledge of other animal models and ensuring animal welfare in biomedical research garnered through her educational training, research collaborations, tenure on the UAB IACUC, and service as a full-time and ad hoc reviewer on numerous NIH grant review panels. In addition to service on the IACUC, Dr. Bailey has served on many university, school, and departmental committees, including the UAB Faculty Senate from 2005-2007.

Dr. Bailey noted, “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve the UAB research community as IACUC chair.”

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the use of animals for research, teaching, and testing conducted at or by UAB. The responsibility of the committee is to provide support, guidance, and oversight to research investigators and all staff working with and caring for animals in the animal use program while upholding the regulatory requirements and standards of federal and international oversight agencies. Compliance with international, federal, and university policies, regulations, and standards is of paramount importance for animal welfare and continued financial support of the researchers and the university.
