On June 10, 2024, the Department of Pathology welcomes a new faculty member to the Division of Anatomic Pathology.
Ayman Tawil, M.D., joins the department as professor, Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Tawil joins us from the American University of Beirut Medical Center’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Beirut, Lebanon, where he served as a professor of Clinical Pathology since 2009.
Originally from Switzerland, Tawil earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 1984. He completed one year of residency in Laboratory Medicine there in 1985, and his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in 1990.
Tawil served as an assistant professor at the American University of Beirut until 1993 before working for a year as an attending pathologist at the University of Geneva Medical Center in Switzerland. In 1994, he returned to the American University of Beirut where he worked his way from assistant professor to professor in 2009.
In Beirut, Tawil served as the Director of Anatomic Pathology for more than two decades. He also served as the Director of Immunohistochemistry from 1996 to 2014 and as Residency Program Director from 1996 to 2012.
Tawil has authored nearly 100 publications and has an extensive history of teaching in courses for medical students and pathology residents, particularly in pathology of the lungs, ENT, liver, GI tract, bone and joints. His research interests include interstitial lung diseases, bone tumors, Celiac and Crohn’s diseases and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
