After a quarter century of service, Dr. Carroll leaves UAB with a vision for a pre-eminent, multidisciplinary, Microsurgical Training Laboratory. This laboratory will be designed to provide UAB residents, fellows, and faculty with unparalleled opportunities to hone their surgical skills.

This Microsurgical Training Laboratory will be a state-of-the-art facility offering advanced instruction capabilities for a variety of subspecialties including Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Craniofacial Trauma, Urology, and Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery. It will be a cornerstone of surgical training for residents and fellows, as well as for experienced surgeons preparing for complex cases — a place to reinforce and refine core competencies in medical knowledge and surgical technique. This facility will significantly enhance training opportunities for our medical community both locally and nationally and will be the ideal setting for case-based teaching, collaboration, feedback, and observation.

The proposed site will be located in Volker Hall, encompassing approximately 2,000 square feet of newly renovated space offering demonstration/teaching and simulation areas equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. It will be a place for our residents and faculty to hone distinct surgical skills in areas such as cranio-facial trauma, microvascular reconstruction, and anterior and lateral skull base, to name a few. The training center will also provide opportunities to share our knowledge and expertise with others locally and nationally through formal training seminars and conferences.
