The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Adult Reconstructive and Total Joints Fellowship has matched with its first fellow, Waleed Hardan, M.D., who will join the department this summer.

Hardan was born in Jordan and is a graduate of Cairo University, where he obtained his MBBCh medical degree in 2010. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Jordan Hospital in 2016, where he received an honorary award for ranking first on the medical board’s exams.

Hardan also completed two trauma fellowships, one at Kyungspook’s National University hospital in Daegu, South Korea, and another at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.

Hardan has four years of experience working as a board-certified orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at a private sector hospital in Amman, Jordan. Based on Hardan’s special interest and skills in orthopaedic trauma surgery, he was assigned the coveted position of chief resident and an AO trauma faculty instructor for residents and OR nurses.

In addition to his surgical experience, Hardan completed a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic oncology and complex limb reconstruction at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, followed by a second-year orthopaedic oncology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York. He was also collectively involved in the authorship and publication of several articles in peer-reviewed journals.

“I am thrilled to complete this Adult Reconstructive and Total Joints Fellowship at UAB,” said Hardan. “I look forward to strengthening the skills I’ve acquired over the years as a surgeon and clinician to improve patient care, mobility, and longevity.”

Hardan is also excited about sharing this next chapter in his career with his family. “I am a proud husband of my beautiful wife Ruba–a retina and glaucoma surgeon–and the father to two wonderful boys, Khaled and Kareem,” said Hardan. “In my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends, playing sports, swimming, and weightlifting.”
