UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery residents Thompson McMurtrie, M.D., Megan Lameka, M.D., and Scott Mabry, M.D., placed first, second and third- respectively- in the Alabama Orthopaedic Society’s (AOS) Chestley L. Yelton Resident Essay Competition.
McMurtrie’s paper, “Risk of Acute Kidney Injury after Antibiotic Prophylaxis with Piperacillin and Tazobactam,” received first place in the annual competition. His listed principal investigator (PI) was Director of Clinical Research Clay Spitler, M.D. McMurtrie also received third place in the 2020 competition.
McMurtrie will receive a cash award of $1,500 from the AOS, while Lameka and Mabry were received a $1000 and $500 award, respectively. All three residents will present their research at the AOS annual meeting in May. Other Department of Orthopaedics residents will participate with poster displays. McMurtrie is pleased to have placed in the competition and recognizes the impact his paper has on orthopaedics.
“Our residents consistently produce excellent research, and I am proud that they have been recognized by such an outstanding organization,” said Michael Johnson, M.D., director of the orthopaedic surgery residency program. “We are delighted that our residents graduate not only with clinical expertise, but also highly-refined research skills.”
Lameka’s paper won second place and was titled, “Systemic Complications of Obesity in Operative Acetabular Fractures.” Her listed PI was also Clay Spitler, M.D., similar to McMurtrie’s paper.
Mabry’s paper, “Short-Term Outcomes When Using a Nail-Plate Construct for Periprosthetic Distal Femur Fractures,” took home third place. His listed PI was Trauma Section Chief Jonathan Quade, M.D.
