UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty Michael Johnson, M.D. (left), and Sameer Naranje, M.D., MRCS (right), have been promoted to associate professors. Additionally, Johnson was granted tenure with UAB.
Johnson began with the department in 2013. He received his medical school training at UAB, his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Tennessee and his fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle. Johnson received numerous honors, scholarships and awards during his training period.
Johnson’s clinical interest and specialty is diagnosis, treatment and therapy of foot and ankle disease, injuries, pain management—both non-operative and operative. He currently serves as the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program director.
Naranje joined UAB in 2016. Naranje completed his adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He has also completed advanced orthopaedic surgery training at Campbell Clinic, UAB and AIIMS, New Delhi after earning his medical degree from Government Medical College, Nagpur, India.
His clinical interests include adult hip and knee disorders, arthritis and fracture care. He is currently director of fracture fragility care program at UAB which involves comprehensive care of geriatric patients who have fractures related to osteoporosis.
Both faculty members are looking forward to the increased responsibility and opportunity for impact in the department, and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Chair Steven Theiss, M.D., is proud of the work of both Johnson and Naranje.
“Their promotion indicates the contribution both have made both clinically and academically to the department. I’m certain that their careers will continue to flourish,” said Theiss.
