Department of Orthopaedic Surgery resident Jun Kit He, M.D., and Associate Professor and Director of International Education Ashish Shah, M.D., received the 2020 Eric Roger Wroclawski award for their paper published in the einstein (São Paulo) journal. Haley McKissack, BA (research fellow, 2018), was also an author.
Officially, He and Shah won second place in the surgery category. Their paper was titiled, “Biomechanical comparison of plantar-to-dorsal and dorsal-to-plantar screw fixation strength for subtalar arthrodesis,” and the objective of the study was to compare screw fixation strength for subtalar arthrodesis.
The study concluded that in subtalar arthrodesis, there is no significant difference in construct strength between dorsal-to-plantar and plantar-to-dorsal screw orientation. The approach chosen by the surgeon should be based on factors other than the biomechanical strength of the screw orientation.
einstein (São Paulo) is the official scientific publication of the Instituto Israelita de Ensino e Pesquisa Albert Einstein, ISSN 1679-4508, published in-print quarterly and designed to communicate contributions of the health scientific community.
