Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Section Chief of Joint Arthroplasty Elie Ghanem, M.D., and Professor Herrick Siegel, M.D., published “Perioperative Assessment of Muscle Inflammation Susceptibility in Patients with End-Stage Osteoarthritis” in the Journal of Applied Physiology.
Researchers hypothesized that muscle inflammation results in a perturbed perioperative gene expression profile and decreases skeletal muscle integrity in patients with end-stage osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. It involves the breakdown over time of joint cartilage, resulting in pain from bone rubbing against bone. Study authors believed that muscle inflammation susceptibility can worsen the effects of OA for patients.
Researchers did find that muscle inflammation susceptibility was ultimately accompanied by decreased skeletal muscle integrity for patients. Their findings highlight the impact of identifying patients with muscle inflammation susceptibility before any surgical procedures in order to inform optimal post-surgical care.
