Department of Orthopaedic Surgery incoming resident David Patch, M.D., alongside his colleagues, published a review article titled “Diagnosis and Management of Traumatic Hemipelvectomy” in the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The objective of their research was to provide the general orthopaedic surgeon tools necessary to successfully diagnosis and acutely treat traumatic hemipelvectomy (THP). Researchers concluded that early recognition and successful resuscitation for THP is crucial for successful outcomes and attempts at skeletal fixation should be avoided. Notably, completion of amputation within 24 hours of injury is paramount in preserving life.
