Brian Samuels, MD, PhD, Paul Gamlin, PhD, and Anupam Agarwal, MD, at the Heersink School of Medicine Fall 2024 Endowed Chairs and Professorships ReceptionThe Heersink School of Medicine recently celebrated eight distinguished faculty members during the Fall 2024 Endowed Chairs and Professorships Reception. Among the honorees were two faculty from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences: Brian Samuels, M.D., Ph.D., EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair of Ophthalmology, and Paul D. Gamlin, Ph.D., White-McKee Endowed Professorship of Ophthalmology. Both are highly respected leaders in their fields, known for pioneering research that bridges clinical practice with scientific discovery in vision science.

Samuels specializes in diagnosing and treating glaucoma, focusing on how brain-eye pressure imbalances lead to the condition. His research aims to uncover how the brain controls intraocular pressure, potentially leading to innovative treatments for glaucoma and other eye diseases.

“It is an honor to hold the EyeSight Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair of Ophthalmology. The EyeSight Foundation has not only been supportive of the department and hospital, but of my research throughout my time at UAB. It is always special when you have a personal connection with such a wonderful philanthropic partner. EyeSight has long been responsible for helping propel the department forward and we are grateful for their ongoing support,” Samuels shared.

Gamlin's research investigates how the brain controls eye movements necessary for viewing objects at various distances, a key area for understanding conditions such as amblyopia and strabismus. Using methods like electrophysiology and neuroimaging, he also studies light-sensitive retinal ganglion cells to better understand circadian rhythm regulation. In a parallel line of inquiry, Gamlin explores gene therapies targeting retinal cells to treat blinding diseases. “It is an honor to be named to this endowed professorship. It is particularly meaningful as I worked with Milton ‘Luke’ White; he was a brilliant ophthalmologist” Gamlin said of this recognition.

This year’s endowed chair and professorship recipients reflect the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s commitment to excellence, supported by generous donations that empower faculty research, teaching, and professional development. Endowed positions provide critical resources for lab operations, student involvement, and collaboration, strengthening UAB’s impact in medicine and vision science.
