Application Requirements & Selection Process

The University of Alabama OB/GYN Residency Program participates in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Basic criteria for applying to our residency program include:

  1. Three letters of recommendation
  2. Medical school transcript
  3. Personal statement
  4. Curriculum vitae
  5. Dean’s Letter (received September 29, 2021)

The application deadline is October 1, 2021. Only completed ERAS applications submitted by this date will be considered.

Invitations to interview with available dates will be extended by our program coordinator and are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all interviews will be conducted virtually on the Zoom platform this year. The interview day schedule will include presentations by the Department Chair, Residency Program Director, and the Administrative Chief Residents. Applicants will also interview with the Residency Program Director, our two Associate Program Directors, two faculty members, and two residents.

Applicants are also strongly encouraged to participate in our virtual hangout with the current residents the evening before the interview. The virtual hangout provides an excellent opportunity to get to know our residents in a more relaxed setting.

    3. Applicant Virtual Hangout
A virtual hangout is scheduled in the evening prior to the interview day and is our substitute for the traditional applicant dinner.  We feel this round-robin sy=tyled event is a great way to get to know our residents in a more relaxed and informal setting, without suits!  Spouses, significant others, and children are also welcome to join the conversation.  While the event is optional, this time with residents outside of the hospital has always been a valuable component of the interview experience, and we feel this holds true in a virtual setting.  We ask that when you confirm your interview date, please notify us if you'd be unavailable for the virtual hangout the night before your interview.  You will receive more information regarding the hangout  with Zoom login information and timing via e-mail the week prior to your interview.  If you do not receive this information, please contact Candace Goudy at cgoudy@uabmc.edu.
    4. Second Look Weekend
Following your interview (and pending all COVID-19 restrictions), you will receive information for a designated second look weekend that will allow a formal time to tour our hospital and city, as well as meet our residents in person.  If you are unablet to visit Birmingham on the designated second look weekend andwould like to coordinate another time, please contact Sara Beth Norton at saradeas@uabmc.edu.
