The Undergraduate Immunology Society (UIS) at UAB brings together students who share a strong interest in immunology and a commitment to education, outreach, and scientific engagement. Supported by the UAB Department of Microbiology, the UAB Immunology Institute, and its Undergraduate Immunology Program, UIS is a student-led organization that promotes awareness of the immune system and encourages early exposure to STEM education within the broader community. The society was established to create a welcoming space for immunology majors and other interested students to connect, learn, and contribute beyond the classroom.
The UAB Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health, in conjunction with the UAB Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation, proudly announces the fifth cohort of pilot grant awardees.Four innovative projects have received pilot funding to encourage collaboration between UAB investigators and international partners, tackling critical global health challenges. A multi-institutional study led by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) has revealed a previously underappreciated mechanism by which SARS-CoV-2 infection contributes to long-term lung damage. The study, published in Nature Microbiology, demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 uniquely induces the formation of foam cells—lipid-laden macrophages with pro-fibrotic and pro-thrombotic properties—in human lung tissue.

Elliot Lefkowitz, Ph.D., has pioneered a unique perspective at UAB on the study of viruses: analyzing them via computational techniques, otherwise known as bioinformatics.
