UAB Department of Surgery welcomes Dr. Anji Wall as Vice Chair of Surgical Ethics

The UAB Department of Surgery is honored to announce the upcoming arrival of Anji Wall, M.D., Ph.D., who will serve as the Vice Chair of Surgical Ethics and Division of Transplantation Director of Perfusion and Procurement Services, effective August 1, 2026. In her faculty role as professor, she will also lead the development and operations of the UAB Organ Rehabilitation and Perfusion Laboratory.

Dr. Wall attended medical school and completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University. She then completed her general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University and subsequently relocated to Stanford University for her fellowship in abdominal transplantation.

Before joining the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Wall previously served as the Medical Director for the Center for Innovation, Science, Policy Research, and Ethics (InSPIRE), as well as the Director for the Qualitative and Ethical Studies in Transplantation (QUEST) Lab at Baylor University Medical Center. While at Baylor, Dr. Wall was also appointed as the Vice Chair of the Baylor Transplant Research Institute Committee, in addition to her robust clinical practice as an abdominal transplant surgeon within the Baylor Simmons Transplant Institute. As the Surgical Director of Organ Perfusion and Preservation, she built a robust normothermic regional perfusion program in abdominal transplantation at Baylor, pioneering the introduction of this procedure in the US.

A dedicated surgeon scientist, Dr. Wall has published 129 research articles; authored the book, Ethics for International Medicine: A Practical Guide for Aid Workers in Developing Countries; and completed an additional seven book chapters spanning topics from surgical ethics to transplantation. She currently serves on the editorial boards for Liver Transplantation, Frontiers in Transplantation, and the American Journal of Surgery.

In addition to her outstanding contributions to the literature of surgical research, Dr. Wall is an in-demand faculty presenter, who has delivered over 110 grand rounds and visiting professor lectures. A member of numerous surgical societies, including the American Society of Transplant, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the Consortium for Surgical Ethics , she has delivered over 100 conference presentations.

Recognized for her pioneering findings in the field of transplantation, Dr. Wall has been awarded the Visionary Leader Award by the Alliance for Organ Donation and Transplantation and the Rising Star in Transplantation Surgery recognition from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
