Demario S. Overstreet, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UAB Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, has received a two-year (L30) Clinical Research Loan Repayment Program (LRP) award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The highly competitive award renewal follows his previous L70 Research LRP award and supports his continued commitment to patient-oriented clinical and translational research. This award also marks his second consecutive award from the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Programs.
The programs repay part of a researcher's qualified educational debt in exchange for a commitment to spend an average of at least 20 hours a week on NIH mission-relevant research. Renewal awards are competitive, and NIH states that submitting a renewal application does not assure funding.
Overstreet's initial NIH Loan Repayment Program award supported the development of his emerging research career. The consecutive award reflects the maturation of that trajectory, from mentored investigator to independently funded NIH/NIGMS scientist and research mentor, highlighting sustained scientific productivity, research leadership, and a growing commitment to developing the next generation of investigators.

Overstreet credits the LRP with helping to sustain his research career, and he hopes to pay the opportunity forward through his career.

About the NIH Loan Repayment Programs
The NIH Loan Repayment Programs repay up to $50,000 per year of a researcher's qualified educational debt in exchange for a two-year research commitment and reimburse a portion of the federal taxes owed on that repayment.
More than 1,600 scientists receive loan repayment contracts each year. The NIH reports that program participants stay in research careers longer, apply for and receive more research grants, and are more likely to become independent investigators than peers who do not receive the funding.
The annual submission window for new and renewal applications runs from September 1, 2026 to November 17, 2026.
