Douglas Anderson, M.D., M.S., associate professor in the UAB Division of Transplantation, has been appointed to the Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee of the Society of University Surgeons (SUS).
The committee reviews and manages conflicts of interest and ethical considerations for the society, the SUS Foundation, and the Academic Surgical Congress, which is widely regarded as one of the largest academic surgery meetings in the country. The group also advises the SUS on its policies and practices. Members are appointed by the SUS president and serve two-year terms, placing Anderson in a national role that helps safeguard the integrity of academic surgery's research and education programs.
“Trust is the foundation of academic surgery. I am glad to help the society keep its research and education free of undue influence so the field can focus on the pathway of research and innovation,” Anderson said.
In addition to his appointment, Anderson serves as program director of the UAB Abdominal Transplant Fellowship and director of pancreas transplantation. His clinical and research focus includes kidney transplantation and immunosuppression.
Anderson earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in biomedical engineering and his medical degree at Vanderbilt University. He completed his general surgery residency and transplant surgery fellowship at Emory University.
“Dr. Anderson brings sound judgment and a clear commitment to ethical research in everything he does, from leading our abdominal transplant fellowship to advancing the science of kidney transplantation,” said Jacqueline Garonzik Wang, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Division of Transplantation and co-director of the Comprehensive Transplant Institute. “He will represent UAB well on a national stage and help protect the standards that academic surgery is built on for patients and trainees alike.”
