Alizeh Abbas, M.B.B.S.a research resident in the UAB General Surgery Residency Program, has been selected for membership in the Delta Omega Honor Society.

Founded in 1924, Delta Omega is the honorary society in Public Health. The society was established to celebrate excellent academic achievement, devotion to public health principles, and outstanding service in public health.

The Upsilon Chapter of Delta Omega, established at UAB in 1989, inducts members who promote scholarly pursuits in public health both at the UAB School of Public Health and the within the community at large. Induction recognizes individuals who demonstrate outstanding achievement in leadership, research, scholarship, service, and academic performance. Each year, nominees are selected from the top 25% of their class, making induction into this national public health honor society a significant distinction. Abbas was chosen as one of a select few inductees based on her exceptional performance across these areas.

As part of this recognition, Abbas will receive an official Delta Omega certificate and be acknowledged during the Spring 2026 commencement activities.

“This recognition speaks to the strength of Abbas’s dedication, scholarship, and commitment to advancing both patient care and public health,” said Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, program director of the UAB General Surgery Residency Program. “We are proud that Abbas meaningfully contributes to the public health landscape.”

In 2025, Abbas was selected as a recipient of the UAB Office of Postdoctoral Education Travel Award to present at the 2025 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons. She presented research related to patient engagement technologies, caregiver perspectives, and barriers and facilitators to a smooth surgical journey for patients with gastrointestinal cancers.

Also in 2025, Abbas won third place at the American College of Surgeons Advocacy and Health Policy Abstract Competition in Washington, D.C. for her research on improving colorectal cancer screening and patient engagement in rural Alabama.

“I’m honored to be selected for Delta Omega membership,” Abbas said. “This recognition reflects the mentorship and support I’ve received throughout my training, and I am passionate and excited about continuing to contribute meaningfully to patient care and public health.”
