Theresa WrightTheresa Wright, administrative supervisor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and Leen Matalka, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, have graduated from the Elevate Leadership Academy, an eight-month leadership development program designed to strengthen leadership skills and prepare participants for expanded leadership responsibilities.
The Elevate Leadership Academy brings together emerging leaders and individuals currently leading teams from across organizations and industries. Meeting monthly from October through May, participants engage in full-day sessions focused on communication, strategic thinking, innovation, creative problem-solving, team trust-building and leadership development. Facilitated by industry professionals and faculty experts from the UAB Collat School of Business, the program combines experiential learning, collaborative discussions, practical leadership training and group projects.
For Wright, the program provided valuable opportunities to strengthen her leadership abilities while expanding her professional network.
“The Elevate Leadership Academy was a valuable experience that helped strengthen my leadership skills, particularly in understanding different communication styles and how to adapt my approach to better support my team and colleagues,” said Wright. “I also appreciated the opportunity to build connections with leaders inside and outside of UAB. Networking across organizations provided new perspectives and ideas that I can bring back to my role, while also creating opportunities for continued collaboration with internal leaders.”
Leen MatalkaMatalka said the academy offered a chance to focus intentionally on leadership growth while gaining practical skills that can be applied in her work as a physician and educator.
“The Elevate Leadership Academy gave me the opportunity to step back from the day-to-day demands of medicine and intentionally develop as a leader,” said Matalka. “I gained valuable insight into communication, team dynamics, innovation and strategic problem-solving while learning from an incredibly collaborative cohort. The experience strengthened my confidence as both a physician and leader and I look forward to applying these skills to mentor others, build stronger teams and contribute more effectively within my institution.”
By completing the program, Wright and Matalka join a growing network of professionals dedicated to advancing leadership excellence and fostering collaboration across disciplines. The skills and connections gained through the academy will support their continued contributions to the Department of Pediatrics and the broader UAB community.
Congratulations Wright and Matalka!
