University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery Assistant Professor Satoru Osuka, M.D., Ph.D., was recently awarded a National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Foundation Young Investigator Award (YIA) for his project, “Tumor-Matrix-Binding TGF-β scFv to Suppress TGF-β Signaling in Recurrent Glioblastoma.”
Osuka is one of only five researchers selected as a recipient of this award for 2026. This funding, awarded in the amount of $150,000, will support Osuka’s ability to expand his research laboratory and advance brain cancer research.
Glioblastoma remains one of the most challenging brain cancers to treat, with a median survival of only 12 to 15 months after diagnosis, despite standard-of-care treatments, like surgical tumor resection, chemotherapy and radiation.
According to the NCCN, YIA winners represent “tomorrow’s leaders for advancing cancer care.” Through his research, Osuka hopes to pave the way for a new and more effective treatment option for glioblastoma patients.
