Often working behind the scenes, these individuals are crucial parts of their teams and take on a variety of responsibilities to ensure the effectiveness of their units. Coinciding with this important day of recognition, a pivotal member of the Department of Medical Education reached a major milestone in their career. Denise Coston, administrative associate for Nick Van Wagoner, M.D., and Todd Peterson, M.D., celebrated her 35th year with UAB.

Of her 35 total years at the school, the last 20 years have been in service to Medical Student Services (MSS). She has operated as a selfless and dedicated member of the team, always thinking of the wellbeing of her coworkers and the students MSS serves. While often working outside the spotlight, the effects of her efforts can be felt throughout the department.

"Denise is the glue that holds Medical Student Services together,” said Nick Van Wagoner, M.D., associate dean for Students. “She is so invested in serving others and in particular our students. She is always available and willing to help, no matter the task, if it will make the life of someone else better."

Todd Peterson, M.D., assistant dean for Students, echoed similar sentiments about her impact on the team. "Denise is the most dedicated and kind professional that I have ever met,” he said. “She cares deeply about our students and has made a lasting impact on countless lives during her time at UAB."

In November 2025, the Department of Medical education unveiled its first cohort of Unsung Heroes, highlighting staff who make significant impacts behind the scenes, and Denise Coston served as the inaugural headline. Nominated by directors within MSS, the piece detailed the personal and caring side of her impact, in addition to the critical administrative work she provides.
