The project flows from a similar innovation challenge hosted two years ago that focused on the topic of stress reduction. David Rogers, M.D., MHPE, senior associate dean for Faculty Affairs and Development, said around 100 senior faculty members responded to a survey stating they would want a mentor in navigating the stages to come in their careers. Rogers, along with Jessica Merlin, M.D., MBA, assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, hosted a career development workshop for junior faculty earlier this year.
Rogers is asking faculty to use the web platform to submit ideas on what topics they want addressed in a workshop focused on the development needs of mid-career and senior faculty.
“I want to take this opportunity to hear from faculty directly about what is important to them and what types of information would be most helpful for them as they continue moving in their careers at UAB,” Rogers said. “Please provide your ideas, vote for the ideas that resonate best with you, and engage with your colleagues in discussion as we design a program that is unique to more senior faculty.”
Some areas for discussion include:
- Increasing resilience and career adaptability
- Research funding strategies for mid-career faculty
- Personal financial planning (i.e. as it relates to balancing against a pension plan)
