Many, M.D. (right)The Montgomery Regional Medical Campus is celebrating two Montgomery-based medical legends who were named to this year’s Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame: the late J. Jack Kirschenfeld, M.D., and Wickliffe J. Many, M.D. They are joined in this year’s class of honorees by UAB President Ray L. Watts, M.D., and Dean of the UAB School of Nursing Maria Rodriguez Shirey, Ph.D.
The Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame, founded in 1997, honors individuals who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to healthcare in the state. This year's induction ceremony will take place on August 8 in Montgomery, where Kirschenfeld and Many will be honored alongside ten other distinguished healthcare leaders from Alabama.
Both men have dedicated significant portions of their careers to strengthening medical education in Alabama's River Region. Their induction reflects the profound and lasting impact they've had on healthcare across the state.
Honoring the legendary of J. Jack Kirschenfeld, M.D.
The late J. Jack Kirschenfeld, M.D. served as a professor in the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine and director of the Montgomery Internal Medicine Residency Program. Throughout his career, he was known for his steady leadership in medical education and his commitment to training physicians who would go on to serve communities throughout the River Region. His influence extended well beyond the walls of any single classroom or clinic. Generations of physicians who passed through the residency program under his direction carried his teachings and values into their own practices, multiplying his impact.
Though Kirschenfeld passed away before witnessing this honor, his induction into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame is a testament to the enduring nature of his contributions. Medical education is, by its very design, an investment in the future, and Kirschenfeld's legacy continues to shape the standard of care patients receive today, carried forward by the countless medical trainees he mentored.
Championing the future with Wickliffe J. Many, M.D.
Wickliffe J. Many, M.D. served as founding Dean of the Heersink School of Medicine's Montgomery Regional Medical Campus. He is being recognized for his ongoing commitment to expanding medical education opportunities and addressing one of Alabama's most pressing healthcare challenges: the physician workforce shortage.
Alabama, like many states, faces significant gaps in access to healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Many's leadership at the Montgomery Regional Medical Campus has focused on training physicians who understand, and are equipped to meet, the specific needs of Alabama's communities. By expanding educational opportunities and pipelines for future doctors, he has worked to ensure that more Alabamians, regardless of zip code, have access to quality care close to home.
