acmg news articleThe American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) hosted its Annual Genetics Meeting March 10-14 in Baltimore, Maryland. The UAB Department of Genetics had significant involvement during the meeting. 

During the meeting, Nathaniel Robin, M.D., spoke and served as platform moderator for the talk “Beyond the Genetics Clinic: Frontline Perspectives on Integrating Genomics in Specialty Care” for the Medical Director SIG. Pongtawat Lertwilaiwittaya, M.D., served as platform moderator for the talk, “Hereditary cancer and adult genetics” at the meeting.

UAB also had representation on ACMG committees. Anna Hurst, M.D., served on the Program Planning Committee; Pongtawat Lertwilaiwittaya, M.D., served on the Continuing Certification Program Committee; and Fady Mikhail, M.D., Ph.D., served on the International Outreach and Engagement Committee. Lertwilaiwittaya and Hurst additionally served as judges for the ACMG Genius Challenge. Lertwilaiwittaya also presented two posters at the meeting.

ACMG awarded summer travel awards, and three of the four recipients were from UAB.

“The ACMG Annual Meeting is where clinicians gather to hear about the latest clinical advances in our understanding of genetic conditions, as well as new testing technologies and treatments,” said Nathaniel Robin, M.D., director of Clinical Genetics at UAB.

“It is also an opportunity to interact with national partners,” Robin said. “It is also the venue where we interact with colleagues from around the country, as well as industry leaders. We always return with new ideas on ways to improve our clinical services.”

“UAB has been well represented among the leadership of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics,” Robin said.

Anna Hurst, M.D., will serve as vice-chair of the program committee in 2027. She will be named chair in 2028.
