Dean's Message January 15, 2025

As we embark on this new year, I find myself reflecting on the core values that define the Heersink School of Medicine. Values such as compassion, innovation, and excellence guide our actions each day. In 2025, I am focused on bringing these ideals to life in every facet of our work together.

The years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have tested us in many ways, most of which we could not have anticipated. From navigating global conflicts and political divides to continuously adapting to an evolving landscape of health care and education, we have faced unprecedented challenges. Yet through it all, we have remained steadfast, anchored by our mission: To advance health and healing through patient care, education, and discovery. These pillars have illuminated our path forward and will continue to do so.

As we look ahead to 2025, it is a great time to consider the goals we set—not only as an institution but also as individuals. Whether or not you typically make New Year’s resolutions, having a sense of direction and purpose can be a deeply rewarding experience. Personal goals, much like professional ones, thrive when supported by a plan and a network of encouragement.

The same principles apply to our shared ambitions at the Heersink School of Medicine. This year, I hope we will focus on developing more cutting-edge innovation, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and leveraging digital technologies to revolutionize patient care and medical education. Additionally, it is a priority for my leadership and me to prioritize the well-being and professional development of our faculty, staff, and trainees.

Our aspirations are more than goals—they are reflections of who we are and what we strive to become. In a world that continues to evolve rapidly, our shared goals to save lives, empower health, and restore hope for our patients remains our compass. Let us focus on these goals and use it as the driving force for the year ahead.

I encourage us to channel the resilience we have built into a year of intentional growth and transformative progress. Together, we can expand our impact.

To kick off this journey, I invite you to join me in two weeks for the annual State of the School presentation on Jan. 29, 2025, at noon CST in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. Boxed lunches will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Together, we will reflect on the past year and reaffirm our collective purpose.

Thank you for the incredible work you do each day. Your dedication inspires change and shapes the future of medicine. Let us approach 2025 with clarity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
