U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-2017 Best Hospitals report ranks UAB Neurology & Neurosurgery No. 25 nationally, and No. 5 among public institutions.
“UAB Neurosurgery is committed to providing outstanding care and we believe this national recognition reflects both our dedication and expertise,” said James M. Markert, M.D., Chair, UAB Department of Neurosurgery.
A hospital’s score for Neurology & Neurosurgery is based on data including volume of high-risk patients, patient survival, available technology and nurse staffing, and reputation amongst other specialists in the area. UAB was ranked highly for patient survival and nurse staffing, and also has a very high number of patients.
Overall, UAB Hospital was rated No. 1 in Birmingham and Alabama, and eight other UAB specialties joined Neurology & Neurosurgery to be listed among the nation’s top 50, up from six specialties the previous year.
“We are proud to be one of the best hospitals in America, and located in Alabama,” said Health System CEO Will Ferniany. “UAB Medicine is something all people in Alabama should be proud of. We even have a bumper sticker that says ‘Our Nationally Ranked Team Wears Scrubs.’ While we are nationally ranked and internationally known, our faculty and staff never forget they are here to serve the people of Alabama with the best medical care possible.”
In addition to UAB Neurology & Neurosurgery, UAB's highest-ranked programs included, Rheumatology (11), Gynecology (16) and Nephrology (20), Pulmonology (29), Ear, Nose and Throat (29), and Diabetes and Endocrinology (30), Cardiology and Heart Surgery (37) and Urology (47).
