Originally born in Rockledge, Florida, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery Professor and Neurosurgery Residency Program Director Curtis J. Rozzelle’s, M.D., clinical interests focus primarily on surgical site infection prevention, hydrocephalus, epilepsy surgery, complex spinal disorders and craniofacial surgery.
Board-certified by both the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, Rozzelle is involved in all aspects of patient care relating to neurological surgery, including neurosurgical oncology, trauma, critical care and vascular neurosurgery.
Rozzelle earned his undergraduate degrees, in both chemistry and history, from Duke University in 1987, where he won a Regular Army Commission as an honor graduate of the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Following Field Artillery officer training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, Rozzelle served three years as a lieutenant in West Germany with the 4th Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment (Lance), a tactical nuclear missile unit.
He then earned his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1995 before completing his general surgery internship and neurosurgical residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Upon completing his residency in 2001, Rozzelle went on to complete fellowships in pediatric neurosurgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Branch and in epilepsy surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
In 2008, Rozzelle returned to UAB under the mentorship of Jerry Oakes, M.D., and James Markert, M.D., MPH.
