I love the fact that I can train at a world class institution and still live downtown near the hospital at an affordable price. Birmingham is an up and coming city with lots of live music and new foods to try. The city also has an amazing civil rights history that I have enjoyed learning more about. -

Birmingham is the smallest city I have ever lived in, yet I never felt as if I was missing anything. It has the benefits of city life - such as amazing food, bike share, bars, craft beer, and great concerts - and combines it with affordable living, great outdoors, little traffic, and kind people. I've always felt welcome in Birmingham, from both UAB and the people living there. -

The best thing about UAB is that it is nestled within Birmingham, which in my opinion is Alabama's best-kept secret. Countless awesome restaurants, 4 top-notch state parks at your doorstep, 7 in-town breweries, and a huge IM class to go explore all this with really made me feel at home at UAB -

Come to UAB Internal Medicine. It a perfect combination of a rigorous academic environment in a large research hospital with a friendly group of residents and leadership. Add Birmingham to the mix, a growing mid size city with everyone you could want to do in a metropolitan area without the traffic, and you have the perfect residency. -

Birmingham is a charming city packed with many great restaurants, breweries, and shopping that would normally only be found in major metropolitan areas. I enjoy the outdoors, and Birmingham has several parks and hiking trails located conveniently within city limits. One of the reasons I chose to live here was the fact that I could continue to do the things that I enjoyed doing in larger cities without the traffic or higher cost of living seen in larger cities. -

One of the things that attracted me to UAB was the genuine comradery and warmth I saw during my interview day. I can say that it holds true 3 years later. UAB attracts challenging, complex patients and I have always felt supported at all times. I've also developed great friendships with my co-residents and enjoy spending time outside of work with each other. We try to have monthly book clubs, trivia nights, and just hanging out.
Birmingham is a city for young-professionals with cultural events and festival. It's a foodie town. There are great restaurants all around us! One of my favorite times of the years is Birmingham's Food Week where restaurants provide special-fixed priced menus for everyone to try. I was also pleasantly surprised how dog friendly Birmingham is, from dog parks, state parks, and even breweries and restaurants. -

Birmingham as a city is definitely not what I expected. Downtown Birmingham is both historical and charming, and it has an urban feel just like all other big cities. Some of my favorite restaurants are only a few minutes away from UAB hospital (Carrigans and The Lumbar). At the same time, the neighboring areas/cities around Birmingham have developed so much, so there's no shortage of nice places to shop and explore. Yes, having a Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Costco are important to me, and we have that here! Combining this great city with the best people I've ever met at UAB IM - my residency experience was so much better than I'd ever expected or imagined. -

I love UAB because I found a family here. People go out of their way to help you get where you want to go, and before viewing you as a student, resident, fellow, faculty member or anything else, they view you as a person.
