Abstract

Medical students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine must meet all requirements established by a clinical site before they can participate in coursework or activities delivered at that location.

Reason for Policy

This policy recognizes that medical students at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine complete courses and activities at numerous clinical sites. Each clinical site establishes its own requirements for student participation, and these requirements vary. Students must be in compliance with the requirements established by a specific clinical site in order to participate in activities in that setting.

Policy

Medical students at the Heersink School of Medicine must meet and adhere to all requirements established by a clinical site in order to participate in courses or educational activities delivered entirely or partially at that location. Students who do not document compliance with a clinical site’s requirements will not be allowed to participate in coursework or educational activities at that location. 

Procedure

1. Compliance with requirements.

Many clinical sites have similar requirements that must be met by students for participation in courses or educational activities. These may include, but are not limited to:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) training,
• Inoculation against influenza and other diseases, and
• HIPAA training.

For this reason, the School of Medicine helps to facilitate opportunities for students to complete these requirements before matriculation and/or during new student and clinical orientation. In some instances, university offices such as UAB Student Health and Wellness supply avenues for compliance. 

Some clinical sites have additional requirements that could include duplicate trainings (i.e., site specific HIPAA training) for participation in educational activities at their location. These may include, but are not limited to:

• Fingerprinting,
• Copy of a Permanent Resident Card (if applicable),
• Documentation of Selective Service registration (if applicable),
• Full immunization against COVD-19 and/or an approved medical, disability or religious exemption,
• Mask fit certification, and
• Urine drug screen.

It is the student’s responsibility to meet all requirements at a clinical site, regardless of whether the school provides a structured mechanism to do so.

2. Frequency of compliance.

Some clinical site requirements may only need to be completed and documented once; other requirements may require renewal on an annual or biennial basis. Students are required to keep all requirements current and are responsible for updating and documenting requirements that require renewal.

3.  Noncompliance. 

The Heersink School of Medicine tracks individual student compliance with common requirements, including BLS training, health requirements, and SOM credentialing, at least twice each year. Students who do not document completion of these requirements may have a hold placed on their registration. Failure to clear a noncompliance hold by the deadline may result in delayed financial aid, removal from scheduled courses, and/or placement on a leave of absence.

 In all cases, students who do not meet the requirements of the clinical site at which they are participating in coursework or educational activities are subject to removal from that location, withdrawal from coursework, and/or placement on a school-initiated leave of absence.  Students who fail to meet requirements may be considered in violation of the school’s Technical Standards and/or the Medical Student Code of Conduct.
