The Exercise Clinical Trials Facility is a 6000 square feet core facility that is well-equipped to provide a clean, safe, and user friendly exercise training and testing environment for supervised exercise clinical trials. It contains 5 core facilities: Cardiorespiratory Function Laboratory; Neuromuscular Function Laboratory; Exercise Intervention Facility; DXA Body Composition Laboratory; and Biospecimen Collection and Processing Facility for a wide array of human physiological and performance tests.

Clinical Research Services

  • Exercise testing at UCEM allows our team to assess cardiovascular fitness and exercise tolerance using a state-of-the-art metabolic equipment.

  • Certified exercise physiologists oversee all muscle function tests.

  • Certified exercise physiologists supervise participants during training.

Facility Features

Exercise Intervention Facility

  • 24 resistance exercise stations

  • Olympic barbells, dumbbells, and over 2000 pounds of free weight 

  • 10 stationary cycle ergometers 

  • 9 treadmills 

  • 4 rowers

Cardiorespiratory Function Laboratory

  • 12-lead ECG graded exercise stress testing 

  • Aerobic power, i.e. maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) 

  • Anaerobic power 

  • Steady state cardiorespiratory and metabolic demand during submaximal exercise (e.g., walking, running, cycling, stair climbing) 

Neuromuscular Function Laboratory

  • Joint kinematics (electrogoniometry) and kinetics

  • Maximum voluntary strength (isometric and dynamic) testing

  • Electrically evoked maximum force measurement

  • Neuromuscular power assessment Muscle fatigue testing

  • Muscle activation via surface electromyography (EMG)

  • Computerized balance assessment

  • Computerized gait analysis
