Good News Update: September 26, 2016
Kellie Flood, MD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) and Emily Simmons, MSN, RN-BC, CNL (NICHE Coordinator) led the Seventh Annual UAB Geriatric Quality Symposium on Monday, September 26, celebrating the inter-professional collaboration of 44 Geriatric Scholars in 12 quality improvement projects. The presentation included outcomes reports, recognition of scholars and community partners, awards for outstanding geriatric care, and 62 new inter-professional scholars were accepted into next year’s Geriatric Scholar Program.

Master of the “Massachusetts Model” for treating opioid addiction with buprenorphine, Jeffrey Samet, MD, MA, MPH, recently served as a Tinsley Harrison, MD, Visiting Scholar for the Department of Medicine. His visit, spearheaded by Jessica Merlin, MD, MPH (Infectious Diseases) Stefan Kertesz, MD (Preventive Medicine) and Elizabeth Turnipseed, MD (General Internal Medicine) sparked an important discussion about opioid use, chronic pain, and how UAB might approach addiction medicine in the future. Good News Update: September 5, 2016
UAB Health System partnered with Baptist Health to open the UAB Medicine Multispecialty Clinic at Baptist Medical Center South in August. Ten new physicians have been hired to practice four much-needed specialties, including gastroenterology (2), endocrinology (2), rheumatology (3), and urology (3). The clinic is located on the first and second floors of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine building on the campus of BMC South.
