Elizabeth Turnipseed, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, General Internal Medicine) and Department Chair Seth Landefeld, MD, were recently published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Their invited commentary applauds the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Safety Program for Long-term Care which appears to have decreased the incidence of catheter-related urinary tract infection in 404 nursing homes across the nation.

We have lost a beloved colleague and an incomparable role model in William E. “Bill” Dismukes, MD, MACP. He died June 19 at age 78. Dr. Dismukes’ remarkable impact reverberates throughout the School of Medicine, where he wore many mantles of leadership during his 35 years of service.

An interdisciplinary team of UAB researchers including Infectious Diseases Professor Martin Rodriguez, MD, has made the first direct demonstration that fecal donor microbes remained in recipients for years after a transplant to treat the diarrhea and colitis caused by recurrent Clostridium difficile infections. Ravi Bhatia, MD (Director, Hematology and Oncology) with Dr. Birrer at last weekend’s American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.Michael J. Birrer, MD, PhD, a trailblazer in the early detection and treatment of gynecologic cancers, has been named director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He will start on August 1. Dr. Birrer comes to UAB from Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is director of Medical Gynecologic Oncology and director of the Gynecologic Cancer Research Program at the Gillette Cancer Center. He also serves as the leader of the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center program in gynecologic cancers and is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
