A Few Mustached Marauders. L to R: Rehan Sarmad, MD, Daniel LaVie, MD, Will Varnado, MD, and Matt Pierce, MDOne of the senior fellows in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Daniel LaVie, MD, has organized a team known as the “Mustached Marauders of Malignancy.” Together, they are participating in the movement to “change the face of men’s health” by growing a mustache or beard during "Movember." Each team member started clean-shaven and will grow facial hair throughout the month, so visit their site and vote for your favorite "mo." All proceeds go to the Movember Foundation. 

Professor Steve Rowe, MD, MSPHA two-drug combination therapy for cystic fibrosis improves lung function in patients with certain mutations in the CFTR gene responsible for the disease. In findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Steve Rowe, MD, MSPH (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) and UAB researchers report that the combination of tezacaftor and ivacaftor improved lung function by nearly 7 percent in a subset of patients.

The IM Residents turned out in droves despite the cold temperatures for the annual Camp Dismukes Retreat at Oak Mountain State Park. The entire training program was provided coverage so that residents and their families could enjoy the afternoon together.
